Homemade Vegetable Broth Powder
Oh my gosh–this stuff tastes just like chicken broth! Amazing! Since we started eating nutritarian, I use insane amounts of vegetable broth. I stopped buying the canned stuff in the first month and moved to vegetable broth base powder or the vegetable Better Than Bouillon Base. This is a healthy substitute and I know exactly what’s in it. Not only is broth useful for making soups, chilis, etc., but I also saute veggies in broth instead of oil now.
Believe it or not, I actually had every ingredient on the list already except the celery seed. Now that I have them, I can whip up a huge batch of this stuff any time I run out. In case you’re unfamiliar with it, nutritional yeast is NOT the same type of yeast that you use to make bread–so don’t try to substitute it. Nutritional yeast flakes are yellow and look almost like fish food. They have a nutty, cheesy taste and can be found in most any health store. I order mine from Amazon here. Thanks, Simple. Healthy. Tasty. for the recipe.
- 2 cups Nutritional Yeast
- ½ cup sea salt
- 2 tbsp onion powder
- 1 tbsp turmeric
- 2 tsp dried dill weed
- 2 tsp marjoram
- 2 tsp dried powdered lemon peel
- 1 tsp celery seed
- 1 tsp basil
- 1 tsp powdered thyme
- 1 tbsp dried parsley
- Place all ingredients, except parsley, in a blender in the listed order. Blend until powdered together.
- Add parsley and pulse to chop. Store in an airtight container indefinitely.
- To make vegetable broth, combine 1 tsp of powder with 1 cup of water.

Love this thank you so much, will be making this for sure
It’s wonderful! I hope you like it.
Oh my gosh, thank you! I hate having to use boxes of veggie broth. I’d rather know exactly what goes into it, and this has to be so much cheaper! I’ll have to get a few of the ingredients, but I’m going to whip this up as soon as I can!!
This tastes EXACTLY like chicken broth! I was amazed. Thanks so much for the recipe. We use a ton of chicken broth and it was becoming too expensive. I found dried lemon peel in the bulk section of my health food store. Don’t leave anything out of this recipe!
I’ve been looking for a powdered recipe for ages! Are you sure that’s not too much nutrition yeast? Is the taste over powering cause it’s not my favourite! Hehe thankyou it looks fabulous! X
It tastes very much like chicken broth! Enjoy. 🙂
The pictured spice jars show regular thyme and regular lemon peel. I am not sure where to buy powdered thyme or powdered lemon peel. I am not sure where to buy those.
Also, will the sodium be high when I use this?
I definitely want to try making this. Thank you!
The pictured spices are the ones I used. Salt IS an ingredient. If that’s a concern, you could reduce the quantity. Remember, though, you’re only using one teaspoon of this powder per cup of water, so it’s quite diluted.
Any idea abt mg if sodium with 1tsp
Milligrams of sodium? No, I’m sorry, I don’t.
I make this a lllllll the time but I don’t use the nutritional yeast b/c my ayurvedic doctor said to avoid it. It’s still great. Thank you!
i was told not to use nutritional yeast also. glad that you made it without it and its still good. thanks for this information!!
Thank you for the wonderful recipe. Will no longer be buying the pre-made. Didn’t have to purchase anything to make it.
Thank you! My fave dried veggie broth now has something in it I don’t eat (an MSG product), so have been trying to find a good powdered broth recipe. I tried one that was awful and made my own, also not good, but this worked so well. Just had some delicious ramen with it. Yum.
Awesome! Glad it worked for you.
Have been making veggie powder for years, always looking for a better recipe. Made this and love it! Instead of the lemon rind, I used those little water flavor envelopes, which is supposed to equal the juice of a wedge of lemon, and I also always use a tablespoon or so of xylitol. So, THANKS!
