Up until recently, our Oster was just fine as a blender. I could count on one hand the number of times I used it yearly, in fact. But since we’ve started having green smoothies for breakfast and eating more vegan dishes, I use it at least once, and sometimes 2 or 3 times, daily. The first month with the Oster wasn’t that bad–when I made our smoothies, I would add the kale and a little O.J., then puree, open it, mash the leaves down again, puree, open, etc. Then I would add the next couple ingredients, puree, mash, open, puree, mash, open. All told, it probably took about 15 minutes to make the smoothies, counting fruit and veggie prep.
When my husband surprised me with a Vitamix, though…well, what can I say? The machine is a dream. I can throw like 8 (or more) smoothie ingredients in there at once, turn it on, and I have a smooth liquid. And clean-up is a breeze! Fill half-full with warm water, put in a couple drops of dish detergent, and run it for 30 seconds–KAPOWIE! Clean. I’ve used it to make vegan ice cream, green smoothies, and frosting thus far, and am eagerly anticipating making hummus, peanut butter and soup. Ah yes, did I mention the Vitamix can make hot soup? As in, no pan or microwave required? You add the ingredients and run the Vitamix for 4-5 minutes and the blade friction heats the soup. Crazy, huh?
The Vitamix and the similar Blendtec blenders are definite splurges (pricey!!!), but if you’re going to be using it every day, or multiple times a day, I say it’s worth the price. Vitamix also has a 7-yr warranty.
