I feel a little silly calling this a “recipe,” because it’s so simple, but I never would have thought of this combination of spices on fries, so I wanted to share. Indian food is my favorite cuisine, not because I like food with heat (I don’t), but because I love the unique spices it uses. These fries were absolutely delicious, and our whole family (including the baby) loved them. I will absolutely be making these regularly. I served these with the Healthy Homemade Chicken Strips I blogged here and a side salad.
This recipe is courtesy of “The Happy Herbivore” cookbook.
1-2 yams or sweet potatoes
approx. 2 tsp garam masala
approx. 1 tsp ground cumin
scant cayenne pepper (optional)
salt and pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Slice yams into very thin strips (fries) and transfer to mixing bowl. Spray with cooking spray and sprinkle portion of spices over top. Mix with your hands, re-spray and sprinkle more spices. Mix again and repeat until fries are evenly coated with spices. Arrange on greased cookie sheet in a thin layer and bake until fully cooked and crisp–the cookbook says this is about 14 minutes total, flipping the fries after 7 minutes. I did not flip them and it took about 30 minutes to get them as cooked and crispy as I like.
