I’ve been holding off on making hummus until now because the local grocery store keeps having insane sales–one week it was buy one, get two free–on hummus. However, today we finally ran out and I had no available sales or coupons, so I pulled out the Vitamix cookbook and tried my hand at homemade. Soooo easy! It was ready in 5 minutes and cost about $2 to make. It also made a huge quantity–about two storebought container’s worth. That puts the savings at about 60-70% by making it at home and the taste is fairly comparable.
2 cans garbanzo beans (1 with liquid and 1 drained)
1/4 cup tahini or raw sesame seeds
1 tbsp olive oil
1/4 cup lemon juice
1 garlic clove, peeled
1 tsp cumin
Process all ingredients in high-powered blender or food processor until smooth.
